Rehabilitation Projects

MJP & Associates have an extensive range of experience with trenchless rehabilitation technologies typically used in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. The following are representative samples of the scope of our experience with trenchless rehabilitation technologies.

CIPP Lining / Trenchless Point Repairs

University of BC (2008-2022)

Annual rehabilitation programs arising from our recommendations from the University’s annual sanitary and storm CCTV inspection programs

MJP services: program development, tender preparation, contract administration (change orders, payment, completion), construction quality control, Acceptance Report with supporting documentation

Tender preparation services include custom development of specifications, selection of mains to be rehabilitated, compilation of historical reports and videos, and location maps.

Since 2008, we have performed rehabilitation services on the following quantities:

⦁ CIPP lining: 52 liners
⦁ Trenchless Point Repairs: 93 mini-liners

Additional rehabilitation technologies include:
⦁ Mainline & Interface Chemical Grouting: 21 field tests
⦁ Excavation Point Repairs: 20 locations

Slip Lining

Metro Vancouver (2018) Contract 17-465 Douglas Road Main No. 1 Slip-lining

Rehabilitation of a 380m section of 910mm diameter steel watermain by slip-lining with DR9 HDPE pipe, including joint fusions; main downsized to 762mm diameter.

MJP Services: initial physical examination of the steel watermain, rehabilitation product research, detailed design, specifications, construction reviews of the joint fusion and annulus space grouting, identification of deficiencies, deficiency resolution; as-built drawings; Acceptance Report

Construction occurred in a busy residential area on Albert St between Beta and Delta Ave in North Burnaby.

City of Richmond (2016) Contract T. 5597 No. 1 Rd Box Culvert Rehabilitation (Westminster Hwy to No. 1 Rd.)

Rehabilitation of a 338m long, 1.5mH x 2.8mW concrete box culvert using Channeline® liner panels. Construction activities included excavation of access pits, shoring, culvert slab removal; slip-lining and annulus space grouting, installation of CIPP bridging sleeves between liner and 25 lateral connections, and surface restoration.

Project complexities: Unstable backfill creating voids around the culvert resulting sinkholes; environmentally sensitive (drains into Fraser River); culvert is alongside an arterial road in a residential area; the first time Channeline panel liners were used in BC as method of rehabilitating non-circular drainage structures.

MJP Services: tender and design services; materials procurement; contract administration and quality control services; identification of deficiencies; deficiency resolution; Acceptance Report

Chemical Grouting - Manholes

District of North Vancouver RFSO.065.19 (2019) - Consulting services for inspection of grouted manholes

Provided on-site monitoring of sanitary manhole chemical grouting (4 days), including confined space entry inspections, and report with findings and recommendations.

City of Burnaby (2015-2021) Mainline joint and lateral chemical grouting annual contracts

Weekly or bi-weekly field tests for specific gravity, gel set time, and compressive strength of the grout mix to ensure compliance with specifications and standards; may also perform pump flow tests to ensure correct mix ratio of the two grout mix components. Total field tests for the City since 2015 = 258

Pipe Re-Rounding

Township of Langley (2017-2020)

This multi-year project involved condition assessment of 72 service laterals, re-rounding of 24 sewer mains and chemical grouting of mainline pipe, service laterals and manholes.

For the PVC pipe re-rounding segment, we performed construction reviews and post-rerounding reviews of laser profiling and CCTV videos.

Soil Stabilization

City of Richmond (2018) Contract T.6023 No. 2 Rd Multi-Use Pathway & Intersection Improvements, London Road to Steveston Hwy

MJP was the engineering sub-consultant for the Subsurface Polyurethane Injection part of this road widening project.

MJP Services: Initial confined space entry inspection with report and rehabilitation recommendations; technical advisory, tender and design services; materials research and procurement; contract administration and quality control services; identification of deficiencies, deficiency resolution, final Acceptance Report

Complexity: Unstable backfill created voids around the culvert; a sinkhole had developed, and a section of box culvert had subsided; environmentally sensitive (drains into Fraser River); culvert is alongside an arterial road in agricultural/residential areas
